Water Day

We had a blast during Water Day on Wednesday!  The highlight of the day was a mud slide that several of the kids created near the sprinkler.  They definitely got really messy, but their smiles were worth it!

Blueberries!

We had a great time on our field trip yesterday.  The kids picked tons of berries and were real troopers in the summer heat.  Today we used our freshly-picked berries to make some blueberry muffins.  They were so yummy.  I hope everyone is enjoying the blueberries the children brought home.  Here are some photos from the last two days:

Reading CVC Words

In class, we have been working on reading and writing CVC words.  CVC words are three-letter words with the spelling pattern of consonant, short vowel, consonant.  Some examples of CVC words are: wig, pat, jug.  At the end of kindergarten, children should be able to sound out and read these kinds of words.

The kids have really been getting into at school.  They get so excited when they figure out new words, and I've been so proud of all of their great reading.  To help keep them practicing, I found a few CVC games online.  Check out the links below and leave a comment about the game your child likes best.  Have fun!

Place flags into the sandcastles to spell the word that is said.  You can pick one vowel at a time to help children practice just one sound.

Pick which vowel goes in each word.

Children use the mouse to move around letter and spell the word for the picture shown.  They check their work after they finish spelling the word.

On this main page, you can pick different words endings (i.e. words that end with -at), then your child can make words to match pictures.

In level 1, this game makes CVC words, then the child has to make the sounds, read the word, and decide if it's a real word or not.

Family Picnic

I hope that you all enjoyed the picnic last Friday and are having a peaceful Spring Break! We got pictures of most families at the picnic, but in the crowd, we did miss a few. If you have your own pictures from the picnic, feel free to email them to me, and I will add them to the slideshow. Have a restful end to the break, and I will see you on Tuesday!

Fishing Trip

We had a wonderful field trip to the IFAS Fisheries on Tuesday.  While the weather in the morning was a bit chilly, things warmed up after lunch, and it was a beautiful afternoon for fishing.

When we arrived at the fisheries, we began by learning about the different kinds of fish.  Ms. Sharon showed the children some fish up close and even let the kids touch them.  After that, Ms. Kimberly showed the children how to go net fishing, and we learned about all different kinds of water critters.  Next, we had a break for lunch, followed by the main event: pole fishing!  While not many children had luck catching fish, we had a lot of fun trying!  The sun was shining, and it was so peaceful to sit on the banks of the pond and just wait for a fish to bite.

Check out some of the sights from the day:

St. Patrick's Day

Last week, we read lots of books about leprechauns.  The children were really excited about the idea of catching a leprechaun, so they decided to make some traps during center time on Tuesday.  At the writing center, the children made signs to show the leprechauns where to go.  At the art center, the children made arrows and other projects decorated with gold glitter to lure the leprechauns into the room.  In the blocks center, the kids build lots of amazing traps.  A few more kids searched the room to find anything shiny.  They discovered lots of gold buttons in one of our math tubs.  It was so amazing to watch the children all working together on this project.  They shared ideas and were full of enthusiasm.

On Wednesday (St. Patrick's Day), they came into class to discover that leprechauns had come and visited our classroom in the night.  All of the gold buttons were gone, the traps were knocked over, three tiny green hats were found, and a trail of glitter led from the trap to the back door.  There was even a note left behind, telling the children "Better luck next year!"  The look on their faces as they discovered this mess was absolutely priceless!  What a fun morning!

For the rest of the day Wednesday, we did activities related to St. Patrick's Day.  The kids made leprechaun hats and shamrock pins to wear.  They decorated shamrock cookies for snack and learned how to draw a shamrock.  For our math activity, we graphed what green clothing we were wearing and practiced showing the results with tally marks.  It was a great day!

Chinese New Year

Today we celebrated the final day of Chinese New Year.  For snack, the children got to try using chopsticks while eating noodles.  They also ate some fortune cookies and yummy Chinese candy wrapped in rice paper.  After lunch, all of the kindergartners gathered for a Chinese New Year Parade.  Our class made dragon masks and red lanterns to carry, and Mr. Roberts (the music teacher) lent us some hand drums to play.  We marched behind Mrs. Donnelly's class and their amazing dragon (courtesy of Mrs. Feliciano).  As we marched up and down the hallways, classes came out to cheer us on.  What an exciting way to end the day!

Here are some pictures from the day:

Here's a very short video of the kids as the parade began:

More 100th Day Fun!

I've found some math games online that will help your child learn and practice numbers up to 100.  Check out the links below, then leave a comment about which was your child's favorite!

This site has a 100 board that is missing some numbers.  The children have to count along, then fill in what is missing.

This site has a 100 board on which you can highlight numbers.  The adult can call out numbers for the child to find on the 100 board.  You can use different colors for different numbers.

A few numbers "fall" off the 100 board, and the child is guided to put them back in the correct places.

This one is a bit tricky.  A blank 100 board is shown.  The adult calls out a number 1-100, and the child tries to click on that square to find it.  This helps children figure out the patterns on a 100 board.
